About the MERV 12 rating.
Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, or MERV for short, is a filter rating system devised by the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) to standardize and simplify air filter efficiency ratings for the public. The higher the MERV rating, the higher the efficiency of the air filter. Simply stated, a MERV 12 filter will remove smaller particles more efficiently from the air than a MERV 8 filter.
A MERV 12 rating represents the best balance between airborne particulate removal of dust, pollen, airborne pathogens, etc. and overall air purifier system efficiency. Air filters above MERV12 generally require larger, more expensive air purifier systems not normally intended for traditional home or smaller office systems. This is due to the “drag” imposed on the most air purifying system.
Overall, the best filter to buy for your home will have a MERV 12 rating. Smaller than that won’t extract the airborne allergens nearly as well, and bigger than that puts too much “drag” on the system. Higher than MERV 12 ratings are usually used on commercial buildings only.
